History

The first Opernplatzfest took place in 1978. The former Lord Mayor of Frankfurt, Dr. Walter Wallmann, was especially committed to rebuilding the Old Opera, and the Opernplatzfest was his way of thanking the residents and businesses of the Opernplatz who had to endure so many years of building site fencing in front of their premises. At this time the festival was still called the Lucae-Brunnenfest (Lucae fountain festival) and focused on the then newly constructed Lucae fontain. The strength of the visitor reactions made the festival grow rapidly into one of the city´s most important events.
