Frankfurt’s unique museum embankment is known to be one of the world’s most significant cultural locations. And 2012 will be a particularly momentous year for this elegant ensemble of exhibition venues, with a number of museums reopening after extensive renovation and reconstruction. Start your cultural tour on the Römerberg and head to the nearby Historical Museum. Cross the River Main via Eiserne Steg footbridge and make your way to the renovated exhibition halls of the Museum of World Cultures, at home in several neighbouring villas along the riverside. Move on to the German Film Museum, which features a brand-new permanent exhibition and a modernised in-house cinema.

Edvard Munch is known to be one of the pioneers of the expressionist movement. This excellent art show, on display at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, offers a closer look at the work he did using modern photo and film technology, the first exhibition to do so. Aside from some 60 paintings and 20 sketches, the exhibition also presents 50 Munch photographs and four of his films. A further aspect of the exhibition looks at how Munch dealt with a particular subject or theme using diverse forms of art, including drawings, photography, paintings, graphics and sculptures. This repetition of motifs is in fact one of the keys to understanding Munch’s work.

The Museum Embankment Festival, held from 24th to 26th August 2012, promises once again to be an event of very special magnificence. On this weekend, Frankfurt celebrates its museums with a unique festival combining art, culture, music and gastronomy from around the globe. With over three million visitors per year and a show programme replete with museum exhibitions and stage performances of every variety, the Museum Embankment Festival ranks amongst Europe’s largest cultural celebrations. The festivities conclude on Sunday evening with a spectacular fireworks display held directly on the River Main.
