Environmental stickers are obligatory for Frankfurt's low emission zone since October 2008. This is also valid for all vehicles registered in foreign countries, like cars, trucks, and busses, as well as for business travellers and for tourists.
The low emission zone comprises the area between Frankfurt's major motorways A5 in the west of Frankfurt, A3 in the south of the city and A661 in Frankfurt's north.
Access resstrictions for vehicles are issued as follows:
As from October 1, 2008 access for vehicles with all environmental stickers (red, yellow or green),
as from January 1, 2010 access for vehicles with yellow or green environmental sticker,
as from January 1, 2012 access only for vehicles with green environmental sticker.
Vehicles without environmental sticker may not pass through the low emission zone, otherwise a penalty of 40,00 € and a penalty point in Flensburg impend, even if the vehicle would be allowed to pass through the zone based on its emission value.
Already from March 1, 2007 on, vehicle restrictions in low emission zones have been issued in various cities and local districts in Germany. For this reason it is recommended that all drivers to inform themselves about the environmental stickers, and to purchase it on time, if they wish to enter one of the increasing number of low emission zones.
Stickers are available e.g. at the following offices as well as various certified auto repair shops:
TÜV Hessen (German)
DEKRA (German)
vehicle registration offices (German)
