Christmas Time in Frankfurt 2020

The Frankfurt Tourist+Congress Board takes great pride and pleasure in organising the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market, a task it has annually performed for many, many years. In 2020, however, we had to sadly do without the market – for all our sakes.

It was nevertheless our desire to spread a little bit of holiday cheer in these difficult times. With this in mind, we have decided to recreate a little bit of Christmas feeling in Frankfurt for all those of you missing our time-honoured Christmas market.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

For 54 years Frankfurt has had a close relationship to its partner city Birmingham. In 1997 the the idea of giving the British twin city the special feeling of the Frankfurt Christmas market was born. Since 2001 it has been held regularly and is the most successful Frankfurt export to Birmingham.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

This idea became an export hit that is still successful today. Just a few minutes from the New Street train station, in the heart of downtown Birmingham, you find  the largest German Christmas market outside of the German-speaking area. There are traditional specialties and dishes from Frankfurt to try, like Frankfurt sausages, mulled wine, even hot apple wine, Bethmännchen and German handicrafts as well as traditional Christmas presents.

Live music at the music pavilion ensures the right holiday mood.

In 2020 the Christmas market in Birmingham as well as in Frankfurt was cancelled due to the Corona pandemic.

Greetings from the Leader of the Birmingham City Council, Cllr. Ian Ward

The Frankfurt Christmas Tree

The majestic Christmas tree annually set up in front of Frankfurt’s town hall, the Römer, is a time-honoured holiday tradition, the massive spruce exuding a festive feeling on the Römerberg with its thousands of fairy-lights.

Even though the much-loved Frankfurt Christmas Market has had to be cancelled this year, locals and visitors of Frankfurt will at least have their Christmas tree to help put them in the holiday mood.

Our Christmas Tree 2020

On November 19th 2020 the spruce from the Gröbminger Land in the Styrian holiday region Schladming-Dachstein arrived on the Römerberg. It is 21 meters high and will be Frankfurts Christmas tree 2020 for the next few weeks.

Christmas Trees 2010 – 2019

Some love him, some would like to have a different one… the Christmas tree on Frankfurt’s Römerberg causes disagreements between fans and critics every year.

We have created a gallery of Christmas trees from the last ten years to indulge in memories and review the grace of Frankfurt’s Christmas trees. You have to issue your own judgments:

The hot apple wine tastes twice as good from the official Christmas market mug. Remember with us the Christmas market mugs of the last twenty years!

Christmas market atmosphere at home

This year’s Christmas season is being spent at home by most of us. So why not decorate your own four walls and recreate our wonderful Christmas market with some traditional Frankfurt Christmas souvenirs? And while you’re at it, go ahead and order some of our popular Christmastime delicacies online and turn your kitchen into a true Christmas bakery. And then, with a bit of luck, we’ll see you again in 2021, at the “real” Frankfurt Christmas Market!

Christmas recipes

The smell of cinnamon, gingerbread and hot apple wine belongs to Christmas like a festively decorated tree. And while we miss our beloved Christmas market, some delicacies bring a little pre-Christmas mood into our homes.
From traditional classics like Bethmännchen to Christmas reinterpretations like snowman cookies and the Frankfurt Crown Cake. Every baking fan will find something here!
