02nd October - 03rd October 2023

Frankfurt celebrates the Day of German Unity and the fifth anniversary of the creation of the New Frankfurt Old Town
Frankfurt has for many years been celebrating the Day of German Unity Day with an exciting downtown music festival. Known as "Jazz zum Dritten" (Jazz on the Third), the festival features live jazz performances by renowned acts from the international jazz scene. Admission to the festival, which takes place on the Römerberg, Frankfurt's old town centre, is free of charge.
Opening hours: Daily from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm
There's much cause for celebration on the Third of October – not only 33 years of German reunification, but also five years of the New Frankfurt Old Town. Taking place on 02nd and 03rd October 2023, this year's festival jointly commemorates these two speial occasions. "Jazz zum Dritten" has been celebrating the Day of German Unity for many years, while the new old town anniversary is a sort of bonus celebration. The festival's lively and inviting atmosphere is felt all across the old town, musically on the Römerberg stage, as well as throughout the entire old town quarter, the historical centrepiece of Frankfurt.
The New Frankfurt Old Town brings together the past and present of the metropolis on the River Main, historically, culturally and architecturally. The quarter harmoniously combines faithful reconstructions of famous timberframe buildings with a series of newer and more modern structures. Moreover, it also brings together the craftsmanship of former times, colourful housing facades representing all historical eras of Frankfurt and more modern architectonic elements in a well-blended juxtaposition. Today, the New Frankfurt Old Town shows itself as a mixture of museums, private residences, restaurants and shops, idyllically representing the colourful and highly diversified life of our city.
Similarly, "Jazz on the Third" brings together traditional as well as more modern versions of jazz. Few are aware that Frankfurt was in fact the birthplace of jazz in Germany, dating back to the early 20th century, when jazz arrived in Europe from America. Our festival is known far and wide for its diverse range of jazz styles, rearranging the old and creating the new while captivating audiences with an unparallelled soundscape. The musical stage programme is rounded off by a colourful spectrum of cultural offerings.
You'll find a full list of exhibitions, lectures, guided tours and other attractions in our printed programme brochure, which will be available at the Tourist Information Office Römer from 25th September 2023.

Please note: the brochure is only available in German.
The Römerberg Stage in the heart of Frankfurt's historical old town will be featuring live music on both days of the festival, starting at 1:00 pm and concluding at 8:00 pm. You'll also find musical performances of the "mobile variety" throughout the new old town quarter, along with a variety of guided old town tours.
