Wäldchestag (Frankfurt Forest Festival)

In Frankfurt, the Tuesday after Whitsuntide is traditionally known as "Wäldchestag", or "Forest Day". On this day, Frankfurt citizens flock to their municipal forest to celebrate a traditional folk fair that dates back many, many centuries, possibly as far back at the 1300s.
The festival has over the centuries become known as Frankfurt's unofficial "national holiday". "Wäldchestag" is synonymous with the identification and emotional attachment that Frankfurt locals lovingly feel for their hometown.

The History of Frankfurt's "Wäldchestag"
It has never been possible to determine the precise history of the Wäldchestag conclusively. In the absence of documentary evidence regarding its origin, there exist today two variations that are considered possible.
