The Opera Auqre Festival celebrates the magnificent Opernplatz with a lively mix of culture and culinary delights. Surrounded by the historic Alte Oper, the festival provides a stage for the beauty of the square and with spectacular lighting and a carefully selected programme, the festival underlines the uniqueness of the Opernplatz.
This year, our party will take place at an earlier date, but as usual will offer unforgettable moments full of enjoyment and conviviality. As usual, the party will be accompanied by an entertaining music programme.
History and character of the Opera Square Festival
Open-air event
in a class of its own since 1978
Originally created as a thank you from the then Lord Mayor Dr Walter Wallmann to the residents of the Opernplatz, the festival has developed into one of the city's most outstanding events.
These thanks went to the patient people who endured the years of inconvenience caused by the construction work surrounding the rebuilding of the Alte Oper. From the modest Lucae Fountain Festival, which celebrated the completion of the fountain of the same name, it grew into a large-scale urban spectacle known as the Opera Square Festival.
Over the years, the Opera Square Festival has developed into an event that reflects the unique combination of tradition and modernity that characterises Frankfurt. It is the only event of its kind on the Opernplatz, which makes it an exclusive highlight in the events calendar. The combination of historical significance and contemporary staging with dancing, music and culinary delights attracts thousands of visitors every year. The festival celebrates the cultural diversity and quality awareness of the city and symbolises Frankfurt's joie de vivre and openness.
