Garden

The Botanical Garden in Siesmayerstrasse has been part of the Palmengarten since 2012. It was founded by Dr. Johann Christian Senckenberg and its history dates back to 1763. It is thus the first and oldest scientific garden in our city.

Three different locations and three different sponsors illustrate its very eventful history, which has resulted in a unique garden complex with its own profile.

So what makes it so special? First of all, there is the large number of native plant species shown in communities that mimic nature. We find the most common mixed forest communities, such as beech and oak-hornbeam forests, as well as plant communities that colonize extreme dry sites. The regional reference is very emphasized in the Botanical Garden, e.g. plants of the Schwanheimer Düne, the Berger Hang or the basalt grasslands of the Wetterau are shown. Another focus are the endangered plant species, which are listed on the "Red Lists". More than 500 of them can be found in the Botanical Garden and are easily recognized by the red signs. For this purpose, various conservation cultures are carried out and vividly demonstrated and explained on specially prepared beds. The focus is not only on wild plants, but also on cultivated plants, as these are often found in valuable horticultural varieties for our gardens.
